Bitcoin (updated, from August 2017)

This currency is considered an official continuation of the original BTC, although technically it differs significantly from it. In August 2017, SegWit technology was added to the BTC algorithm, allowing some transactions to “bypass” the currency’s blockchain. This allowed for faster transactions and avoided the problems BTC encountered in May.

But the decision to introduce SegWit was not easy: part of the bitcoin community saw it as a violation of the principles described in 2008 by the currency’s creator Satoshi Nakamoto. Nevertheless, the hardforward was supported by the majority of miners and took place in August 2017. Despite the fears of skeptics, the rate of BTC continued to grow and has quadrupled since August. For the whole of 2017 the currency with the designation BTC went up in price 19 (!) times.
